Andy Candy and Marilyn
About the piece
1962 was a very important year for Andy Warhol. On an artistic level, he started to use silk screens and when Marilyn Monroe died in August, he created a series based on her portrait. As for his career, Eleanor Ward, founder of the Stable Gallery, that gave many American artists their starts, offered him his first solo show in NYC which took place November 6 - 24. On this TikTok, Andy shares about his Single Marilyns created in 12 colors also known as the Marilyn Flavors (Cherry, Mint, Lemon, Grape, Lavender, Liquorice...). Eleanor Ward referred to him as Andy Candy and after the show, Andy gave her White Marilyn. He gave Turquoise Marilyn to Jasper Johns whom he admired. The song is "I wanna loved by you" performed by Marilyn Monroe. Andy Warhol was yearning for success, fame and approval from his peers.
